More than 26,000 cups of tea and 35,000 cups of coffee are sold in London Heathrow airport every day. All in disposable cups. You can reduce your use of plastic by having your coffee sitting down at one of the many cafés and restaurants inside the airport.
A Boeing 747 for a long-haul flight carries up to 1,291 dishes, 735 plastic cups, and 164 peanut bags. All of this will be incinerated upon arrival. You can help reduce the impact of plastic during your flights by bringing your own water bottle and snacks from home.
Only 15% of plastic waste is recycled worldwide. 25% goes to incinerators or waste-to-energy plants. The remaining 60% ends up in landfills, incinerated outdoors (releasing pollutants and greenhouse gases), or becomes litter. Get informed and make your choices based on what you learn.
When littered, even biodegradable and compostable plastic products do not break down and can last outdoors or in the sea for many years. Nothing replaces civic sense and environmental education.
